Research Interests

Developing low cost organic semiconductors for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

Organic molecules show great promises as charge transport materials in organic electronics due to their defined structure and structural diversity. Additionally, their optoelectronic properties can be well tuned by modifying the chemical structures. Spiro-OMeTAD is one of the most efficient and widely used hole transport materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, tedious synthesis (5 steps with <50% yield) and high cost (500 USD/g) of spiro-OMeTAD significantly limit the large-scale application in solar cells. Therefore, developing new alternative molecules with high efficiency and simple synthesis is highly desired. In this project Dr. Zhang and his collaborators fundamentally investigate new molecular structure (e.g. 3D molecular geometry, pendent groups, alkyl chains), and applied them into efficient, stable PSCs.

Modulating interfaces in perovskite solar cells

Interfaces play important roles in charge transfer, recombination, hysteresis as well as stability of perovskite solar cells. Understanding the charge dynamics and finding effective interfacial passivation method is required to enhance both efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. By detailed characterization the interface of perovskite/hole transport materials, we proposed a new recombination mechanism which is associated to the chemical dopants. We also explore new passivation methods to suppress the recombination losses without compromising the charge collection.

Large scale, low temperature processed perovskite solar cells

New deposition method for large area perovskite thin film is essential for its future scalable application. Our interest is to develop low temperature processed charge transport materials and perovskite on large area substrates. We have developed spray coating and thermal evaporation for the formation of different functional layers.
